Resolved Question: how are electric cars better for the environment than gas powered cars? Don't they both use fossil fuels?

ok so in the U.S, the pursuit of being better for the environment, car companies are developing every electric cars. But I must say I'm a bit confused! I thought we were trying to clip down on the amount of fossil fuels...doesn't electricity fall below this category? Why are people constantly getting solar panels and why is wind power so important if its every going to now be double time used because everyone's going to be using electric powered cars? I'm so confused I don't think there is anyway out of this, I think driving a vehicle is just going to be bad for the environment no matter what. My ideal world would be to ride a bicycle and steer a Paggio/Vespa around but that wouldn't work in LA...can somebody help me? I have a genuine concern for this...what is the way of the future for vehicles? what can the middle and lower class do about this whole issue?...why sky blue [actually turning gray, but still =P]

Resolved Question: What can i add to this peice of writing to make it long? *quite long*?

It's describing everything around me, during the interval of a musical theate production and im looking for advice about what else i can write about, im thinking of writing something about the people around me but what else can i add? any help you give me is so appreciated; thank you so much! this is what i have written so far >>>> The curtains closed. The audience’s cheers and applause makes me realise I’m not the only person who loved it. I’m so excited for the relax; I’ve never wanted time to go so quickly. The change in atmosphere was incredible. From the silent, tension-filled theatre from before the curtains closed; to the electric animated ambience from the audience. Everything around me is incredible, I can’t help but thinking how I’ve only got 20 minutes to take it every in. The theatre itself is astounding. The angel statues over the curtains remind me of a church, as does the suddenly peaceful environment. Each statue, despite being of distressed naked women is beautiful, but, if it’s possible, at the same time – disturbing. Their unhappy, mad faces staring down were *something yet poignant. However, no matter how sinister or how unusual they are; they still remind me of one of the best days of my life. Each statue, curtain and flame-leave sign constantly remind me of the day I performed there. Every time someone walks through the door; I start to think how that door also leads to the dressing rooms, or to backstage. Most theatres share an almost identical scent. A musty, old-fashioned, vintage nice of odor. It’s neither a horrid nor gorgeous odor, but changing it to a new-car or leather odor would ruin the essence and eerie atmosphere of the theatre, and would entirely change the play. The strong but relaxing scent is a soothing lavender odor; capable of sending me to snooze. The stale aroma, along with the title of the musical, reminds me of a particular night at my grandparents’ home. Six people. Three singing in harmony, two enjoying popcorn, and one asleep. We’ve decided to go outside. It’s difficult communicating at the moment between every the laughter about that older lady who clutched my fathers arm. The journey to outside the theatre is amazing. Curtains, carpets, wallpaper: every velvet and particularly inspiring my mom for interior design ideas. Now outside; a warm London evening, 8pm, reminds me a great deal of being back in La Palma. The warm breeze makes me wish every night were like this. I adore the fact I can take off my cardigan through the night. 5 minutes until we go back inside. I can’t hold my excitement! The thought of seeing another hour or so of one of the best musicals I’ve ever seen makes me want to run inside and ask if they can start it 5 minutes early. I’m looking forward to seeing the show, however, the thought of seeing the Phantoms mask again can be quite spine-chilling. The almost-deformed and burnt-looking mask makes me wonder if the face underneath will ever be revealed.

Resolved Question: Any good locations in LA county to live out of my car?

I would like to live in my car because I like camping more than I like paying rent. Is there anywhere in LA county (not downtown) where I can park my car for free for a long time and that also has a shower nearby (like at a YMCA, relax cease, or beach)? Bonus points for: nearby public library, Wi-fi access, an electric outlet that no one would notice me using.

I was wondering if anyone out there could do some translation on my essay to my pen pal. Im trying to persuade him to take a trip with me to a bunch of cities in Spain. So using the subjunctive would be best or wish and wishes. Also I plan to GIVE EXTRA POINTS to the person who is the most actuary and quickest because I need this asap. Thanks everyone! This is a great opportunity for you and I to travel to this historical country that has been well known for its good food, culture people, and famous cities. If you decide to arrive, I wish that in seven days we will tour and look the best of Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Salamanca, and Zaragoza. When visiting we will look the best attractions the city has to offer. Its only logicol if you arrive with me! We will fly from Boston to Madrid and the plane ticket will cost 600 pesos. En la Plaza Mayor we will take many photos of the bulidings and statues. Next I wish that we can do alot of shopping in la Plaza. The next thing we will visit in the city is Palacio Real. The Palacio Real is very famous for muesum fillTheed with paintings, pictures, and art work. In Barcelona we will also visit the famous Barcelona Zoo. The zoo has a restaurant, picnic area, a store, electric cars, ponies and a mini-train. The animals are known to be intersteing and fun to look at. The amount for a hotel a night will be 200 pesos. Knowing you, you would like the ocean and the zoo. In Sevilla we will stay at the hotel Becquer. The hotel is very famous and well known for their top service. The hotel includes a nice resteraunt, where we will try the famous steak and peppers. Here we will also swim, relax, and have fun. It will be very expensive about 300 pesos. So I recommend you pack your swim suite! In Salamanca we will be visitng one of the oldest Universitys ever founded. The University of Salamanca was started in 1218 and known for teaching the spanish language the best. Here we will take a class in public spanish speaking for about 2 hours. And then stay in the hotel plaza de Angle which is 150 peso a night. The next thing I wish to do is visit and take photos of the Old Cathedral – along with the Cathedral. Its known for being a great building. The last city I perfier to look is Zaragoza. In this city we have to look the famous palace of Aljaferia. This buliding is very big and has alot of detail work done to it. Here we will tour inside and out of this creative buliding. The next site we will look is Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar on the bank of the River Ebro. This use to bring the pilgrams from overseas way back when. Its possible that we might not receive to look the entire building. We will stay in the hotel Zara. The price is 155 pesos a night. I wish that you deicde to arrive with me. As you can look this trip to Spain will but a expirence of a life time and we will learn many new things about the culture and way of living. This is our chance as my better pal to travel and have a good time. I reccomend you keep your money because its important to have enough.

Resolved Question: Why are people fighting the development of renewable energy sources?

I don't understand why people seem to hate the idea of renewable energy sources. What's wrong with it? How is it hurting the economy? It'll lower the cost of production of electricity and satisfy the ever growing demand for power. Not to mention even if you don't believe in global warming what about the smog that's covering the entire LA sky. Smog is proven to cause respiratory problems like asthma. You can actually look it, do you think that's good for you? Even if global warming isn't real, Even if there's enough oil to last us forever what's wrong with finding a cleaner way to produce energy, I mean you can tell how dirty gas burns by looking inside the hood of your car or your tail pipe. There's no sacrifice, electric cars can move quicker than the majority of super cars for a fraction of the price including Ferraris and Lamborghinis e.g. Ariel Atom, Tesla roadster, T-Rex. I really don't look any downside.

Voting Question: why cant working americans get help?

hello heres the scoop, i am 22, in marine reserves, work varies as i am contractor for the banks, average monthly for me after paying self employent tax buisness expenses , gas exe is 800. i live with my gf and i pay utilites and she pays rent as i cant afford it. she works as teller at a bank and makes around 1800 a mth, 900 for rent leaves her with 900 to pay her car, credit cards, insurence, exe she doesnt ever use the money to store but to always to pay her possess bills as i pay my possess, to show i have had a rough time i have had even volutary surrendered my car to keep some expense and i have stoped paying some bills to pay the ones i need to live ex,gas, electric exe. we find ourselves having no food some weeks and having to eat over at relatives nearby, they say we make too much to receive assisstence. 2 points. 1 shouldnt you help the helpless and forget the clueless. if i am working, paying my taxes, being a "good american" and on top is serving time in the military service of the country why shouldnt the average working american that need a little help receive it. why do i have to not work, have alot of kids, not have graduated high school, or be on welfare or many other assisstence programs to receive help. we need to start helping those who lost their jobs, are trying to work and live instead of those who keep having kids, rack up debt, and look for government to provide every they need for their family. 2nd is there anyway someone like me who really needs not a hand out but alittle help receive it?. Afterpaying rent, gas, electric, water, trash, cars(mind you i steer a 91 civic thats a little rusty) their insurence, gas for the cars, and just plain misc bills, ie the plastics, internet, exe, we dont have much left, we even have downsized because of it, we were in a nice neighborhood for 1,100 a mth which is cheap for the chicago suburbs and have moved to "da hood" lol (every the police around sure make me feal safe) for 900mth, and i gave up my car to the repo man, choices to work and better your situation are what we should be looking to reward and help people like that. not those who want to live la vida loca and take whatever they can receive. so anyone with a little suggestion would be great , i wish everyone is blessed and takes care , thanks , semper fi

Resolved Question: How will California charge the batteries of all the electric vehicles they want to use to replace their?

polluting petroleum powered cars? They can't even supply enough power to keep the lights on in LA without buying power from Arizona.

Resolved Question: The price to charge up a electric car?

Think about this, 20 or so years from now the electric car will run about 20k or less and be quite practical. In a city like LA with 11 million people in it " Not to sure about those numbers" . Lets say 5 million cars, trucks, ect.ect every useing electrictricty. As well people useing it on a every day basis. I don;t think the gang at the sierra club will go for the massive incress of power plants that will sprout up every over the US to handle untold millions of cars pluging into the grid. Remember Nuclear power is bad as well as coal as our green friends tell us....I cant look this working out

Right now I am looking at getting a folding electric bicycle (google the Riviera or the eZee Quadro if you're interested in what I mean) to replace my car, but I am living on the East Coast, and it would work out for my situation. In LA, though - can you receive around easily enough on a bicycle? Is it possible to receive around Burbank (or other parts of LA) without going on big highways that would be terrifying to ride on a bicycle? How about a motorcycle, would that make more sense? If I end up living outside Burbank, would it be impossible to commute by bike? Are there some parts of LA that are more bike-friendly than others? Thanks.

Resolved Question: do yall think mta should reuse the belmont tunnel in los angeles as a streetcar or light rail lines.?

the tunnel is the remant of the pacific electric railway that was abandoned 50 years ago. one way they could reuse it by building a new tunnel and then connect it to tunnel that leads to pacific electric terminal building in LA and use it to build a light rail lines using(san francisco's muni lightrail cars) and streetcars to serve echo park, and the relax of hollywood.

Resolved Question: Have you seen the latest Obama vs McCain poll?

Obama just slaughtered McCain in a LA Times/Bloomberg poll by a margin of +12. McCain has so far fallen 5% in the last 3 weeks.. If he keeps going like that (offshore drilling, 300M for the electric car battery, eBay for economic growth) the Obama camp really doesn't have a lot to worry about. http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-poll25-2008jun25,0,5763707.story http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/general_election_mccain_vs_obama-225.html pony soprano: the huge difference between now and the 2004 election was that Bush had a huge fan base at this point. John McCain's supporters, on the other hand, feel they are not enthusiastic about their candidate 55% of the time (yes, more than half of them!) and only 13% of them say they are very enthusiastic. For Obama, the same numbers are 19% not enthusiastic and 50% very enthusiastic. Also, the poll summary by realclearpolitics includes even FOX News.. can you call that liberal bias?

Resolved Question: Has anyone been thinking about building an electric car (home-made) for themselvees any time soon?

I just read of how a man in Los Angelese has converted an old Porsche 914 to an electric car with a 60 mile range for $18,000 (24 guide acid batteries). ( http://www.latimes.com/classified/automotive/highway1/la-hy-wheels2-2008jul02,0,3144785.story ) I thought to myself that's a good idea. Probably better to buy an electric scooter though, if you don't need to take the freeway often as is the case in L.A. I'm now doing some investigation into that idea and I wish to start building my possess electic car also. Does anyone else have similar plans? I have heard about how its actually better to convet old tiny pickup trucks (Ford/Toyota/GM) to electric pickups because the box can hold more batteries and the springs are easily upgraded to hold the extra tonnage. guide acid batts are heavy but they're cheap, so that's why Lithium Ions are shunned for now. My thoughts are to buy an older car, as tiny and light as possible, and then convet it with as few batteries as possible.

Resolved Question: anyone know place in LA, CA where i can get a car converted into electric?

Resolved Question: What is Biodiesel? I’ve read a lot on alternative fuel lately, and I’m interested in others opinions.?

Following a recent article in the LA Weekly, which made alternative fuel and electric cars look very chilly, I started some web research of my possess. Wow, there is a lot out there that makes it look like we could steer a lot greener then we do, pollute less, and cease sucking on the tit of the big oil companies who just showed record profits at our expense, sounds chilly to me. The thing that intrigued me the most was a co-op in LA that sells Biodiesel that can power any non-modified modern diesel car. So I’m in hyper steer with intrigue, and I’m interested in knowing what others know about Biodiesel or the Co-op here in LA LA Land. If anyone is using the stuff can you explain more about it? Note: most of the answers I have received so far don’t go beyond the minimal web research I’ve done following reading the Article mentioned over, but thanks anyway. I just discovered that it is commercially available NOW here in LA, too chilly. Soooo…what I’m looking for are answers form people that are actually driving biodiesel powered cars, and their experience with it, so that I can decide if it is the right choice for me or not.

Resolved Question: Obama? A Socialist? Really?

A recent poll shows that 55% of likely voters said that the word "socialist" describes Obama and his policies. The 21st Century Democrats said, "You and I know [that] is not the case." I only wish it were! I wish Obama had pressed for single-payer national health care. I wish Obama had nationalized Citicorp and Bank of America, rather than bail them out. I wish he would have favored breaking up the relax of the big banks so they couldn't destroy our economy. I wish he would have forced any banks taking federal bailout money to freeze foreclosures for at least a year and freeze interest rates on mortgages and credit cards. I wish Obama would have proposed redistributing income from the wealthy to those who really need it by raising the marginal income tax, and the capital gains tax, and the estate tax. I wish Obama would have proposed a transaction tax on every stock sale so as to curb speculation. I wish Obama would have proposed raising the minimum wage to $10 an hour, as Ralph Nader has proposed. I wish Obama would have replaced Ben Bernanke at the Fed with Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz. I wish Obama would have arrive out for democratizing the Fed, as Dennis Kucinich has recommended. I wish Obama would have proposed a public works program to put every American who needs a job to work. I wish Obama would have ordered every federal building to be installed with a solar panel, and almost every car in the federal fleet to be a hybrid or electric car. I wish Obama would have proposed opening federal grocery stores in areas that are food deserts. I wish Obama would have addressed the cruel problem of poverty in America. I wish Obama would have proposed 12 months of paid maternity and paternity leave, mandatory paid sick leave, and federal child care. I wish Obama would have advocated the nationalization of the armament companies, as Sen. Robert La Follette did back in 1924. No decent socialist would have implemented policies that have left unemployment at over 9 percent and foreclosures at record heights. No decent socialist would have let the banks receive off so easily. No decent socialist would have been caught dead praising the CEOs of Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase and justifying their obscene salaries the way Obama did. ("I know both those guys; they are very savvy businessmen. I, like most of the American people, don't begrudge people success or wealth. That is part of the free-market system.") No decent socialist would have left the health insurance industries in the driver's seat. No decent socialist would have empowered a panel to advocate the cutting of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. No decent socialist would have expanded the war in Afghanistan, a hopeless war being fought by the sons and daughters of America's working class. So, no, Obama isn't a socialist. Not even close. But we'd be a lot better of in this country if he were.

Resolved Question: Should cap and trade alarmists take a note from Art Rosenfeld's book?

Art Rosenfeld is retiring as a California Energy Commissioner at the age of 83. He's an energy efficiency visionary who played the biggest role in making California the most energy efficient state in the USA, using roughly the same enery per capita today as we did 30 years ago. The relax of the country's energy consumption has increased 40% over that period. "New homes and buildings were required to be better insulated and fitted with energy-wise lighting, heating and cooling systems. Appliances had to be designed to use less power. Utilities were forced to motivate their customers to use less electricity. The principle, Rosenfeld said, was simple: Conserving energy is cheaper and smarter than building power plants. Not surprisingly, those rules were attacked by business groups as bureaucratic job killers. Rosenfeld, who received his doctorate from the University of Chicago, was called unqualified by critics at Pacific Gas & Electric Co., one of California’s largest utilities. Yet these mandates have yielded about $30 billion annually in energy savings for California consumers. They’ve eliminated air pollution that’s the equivalent of taking 100 million cars off the roads. They have been copied by states and countries worldwide." "New [television] efficiency mandates go into effect Jan. 1, 2011, and become more stringent two years later. They’re expected to keep Californians $8 billion in energy costs over a decade. Some TV makers weren’t glad. Rosenfeld wasn’t surprised. “The first time we put standards on a product, we tend to receive objections that this will be the ruin of civilization as we know it,” he mused. “But then people receive used to it.” http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-rosenfeld11-2010jan11,0,2961914,full.story This reminds me of carbon cap and trade alarmists, who say this system will destroy the economy even though economic studies have shown it will have a minimal economic impact. Then they attack the scientists. Everyone says these sorts of policies will cost too much, then they're implemented and the alarmists are proven wrong. The same thing happened with CFCs and sulfur emissions when they were regulated. What do you think - should cap and trade alarmists take a note from Art Rosenfeld's book? Eric, increasing efficiency is far cheaper than having to build new power plants to meet rising energy demand. Certain individuals adore to talk about how we need to build more nuclear power plants. Increasing energy efficiency is an order of magnitude cheaper. Oh and by the way, many hybrids pay for the added up-front cost in just a few years. http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2008/05/hybrids-taking.html

Resolved Question: What's going to happen when 500,000 electric cars are plugged to be recharged?

In LA, 5:30 P.M. during a heat wave. Seems to me someone is going to need several new power plants. Would they be Nuclear, oh thats right no nukes. OK then oil wired, oh thats right no big oil. I guess coal, oh thats right global warming. What am I thinking it is California, everyone can receive healthy and run to work.

Resolved Question: Obama promised 'NO LOBBYISTS IN MY CABINET OR ADMINISTRATION' right? Why do you let him off for LYING so bad?

Lobbyists and Tax Cheats Abound During his campaign, Obama promised that lobbyists would not be welcome in his new Washington, his Washington of change and wish. Now that he occupies the office? Several high profile Obama appointees have had major tax issues. One of these is Timothy Geithner, Obama’s new Secretary of Treasury. But, tardy last week, it also came to light that Obama’s choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services, Tom Dsaschle, seemed to have conveniently forgotten to claim a free car and driver as income on his taxes and had somehow made this tax faux pas for years. Eric Holder, Attorney General nominee, was registered to lobby until 2004 on behalf of clients including Global Crossing, a bankrupt telecommunications firm. Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture nominee, was registered to lobby as recently as last year on behalf of the National Education Association. William Lynn, Deputy Defense Secretary nominee, was registered to lobby as recently as last year for defense contractor Raytheon, where he was a top executive. William Corr, Deputy Health and Human services secretary nominee, was registered to lobby until last year for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a non-profit that pushes to limit tobacco use. David Hayes, Deputy Interior Secretary nominee, was registered to lobby until 2006 for clients, including the regional utility San Diego Gas & Electric. Mark Patterson, Chief of Staff to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, was registered to lobby as recently as last year for financial giant Goldman Sachs. Ron Klain, Chief of Staff to Vice President Joe Biden, was registered to lobby until 2005 for clients, including the Coalition for Asbestos Resolution, U.S. Airways, Airborne Express and drug-maker ImClone. Mona Sutphen, Deputy White home Chief of Staff, was registered to lobby for clients, including Angliss International in 2003. Melody Barnes, Domestic Policy Council Director, lobbied in 2003 and 2004 for liberal advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the American Constitution Society and the middle for Reproductive Rights. Cecilia Munoz, White home Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, was a lobbyist as recently as last year for the National Council of La Raza, a racist group. Patrick Gaspard, White home Political Affairs Director, was a lobbyist for the Service Employees International Union. This one, of course, repays a debt. Michael Strautmanis, Chief of Staff to the President’s Assistant for Intergovernmental Relations, lobbied for the American Association of Justice from 2001 until 2005.

Resolved Question: This is a serious legal question?

I have a wage garnishment that already went through for 500.00 even though I filed an exemption with the LA Sherrifs office. Because I filed the exemption I have a court date. The problem is Ive never been in debt in my whole life and im 28, I dont know what to bring to court. I was just approved for a loan modification which means my home was on the brink of foreclousure, but now my payments are doubled to 1800.00. My salary alone is 2700.00, and I have a car payment, gas, food, electric, water, and credit card bills. Would I gift these to the juge indicating that is why I cannot afford to have my wages garnished? Would the judge allow me to settle even though I tried with the collection attotney and was denied? BTW This was an 800.00 medical bill that a collection agency puchased and added about 1200 worth of fees. Both my parents are LAPD and my mom happened to pass away and Im an oly child and was on a leave of absence due to the fact of the way she died and I did not have medical. Should I bring that to the judges attention and bring the death cert, and receive something from my employer for the leave of absense.

Resolved Question: Master Mechanics only! My car runs fine, but then...?

First, the facts: i steer a 1998 Toyota Camry 4 cyl. with 225,000 miles on it. I steer it in cease-and-go traffic from Santa Monica, thru downtown LA, to Pasadena 5 days a week, a 50+ mile round trip, and i only put $10 gas in at a time, and let it run to empty. Recently, the headlights every went out, and since the car is old, i replaced the battery cable connectors. Then the engine light came on, and the car began sputtering at idle. After $300-worth of replacing the fuel filter and water temp sensor via Pep Boys, the problem remains (thanks, jerks). The engine light doesn't arrive on, but if the RPMs are below 2000, the car begines sputtering and shaking, and if i don't rev it, the engine dies. sometimes when i rev it, the car whistles, but doesn't accelerate, like everything is stuck. sometimes i put it in neutral, which helps, but eventually the RPMs dip below 1000, and it dies anyway. The more i steer it, the worse it gets - every day. And every morning, it starts up and runs perfect...till i hit that first block or two, then the puttering and shuddering happens. Since the probelm is EVERY DAY, but not every THE TIME, mechanics can't help, and say everything from transmission to electric is to blame. any REAL EXPERTS out there who can identify the problem? or at least offer some simple tests i can do at home to eliminate some possibilities and narrow down my search!? THANKS SO MUCH!!! if you need any more information to help clarify the problem, don't hesitate to ask! this every started happening around the time that my coolant temp guage began dropping below the minimum at high speeds. replacing the coolant temp sensor didn't change that like i thought it would. if i have any speed at every, the guage shows significant temperature loss, and on the highway falls completely. it does not, however, receive hot, or go very high over the middle no matter how long i've idled or sat in traffic in the sun. sorry, the fuel filter was replaced, not the pump. i wondered about the entire fuel delivery system, but if the lines and injectors are clogged, would it still run perfectly every morning before going bad? i wondered about the entire fuel delivery system, but if the lines and injectors are clogged, would it still run perfectly every morning before going bad? any of you know a quick way to determine if it's a fuel line problem or a maf problem?
